Track ChatGPT Traffic in Google Analytics: A 2026 Guide for India

How to track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, and see which AI tools send visitors to your India or Uttarakhand business website.

To track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics, open GA4's Traffic acquisition report and look at the AI Assistant channel, then filter session source for chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted under Organic Search, so check those in Search Console instead.

Many business owners in Ramnagar, Haldwani and across Uttarakhand wonder whether customers are finding them through ChatGPT or Gemini, but few check it in their numbers. Without measurement, any work on AI search visibility is guesswork.

It also matters for budgets. Google announced on 28 October 2026 that it is expanding ads in AI Mode to India and nine other countries, so AI answers are becoming a paid and an organic channel at the same time. Knowing what AI tools already send you free is the first step before spending on them.

Where does AI search traffic show up in Google Analytics 4?

GA4's default channel group now has an AI Assistant channel. Google's help page describes it as visits from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok.

The same page lists Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode under Organic Search, not under AI Assistant. That is the most common confusion: a click from an AI Overview on Google looks exactly like a normal Google search click in GA4.

Visits that GA4 cannot match to a known AI source will usually appear as Referral, which is why it is worth checking both channels in your first audit.

How do you track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics step by step?

You need Editor access or above to the GA4 property, and the GA4 tag already working on every page of your website. Then follow these steps:

  • Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the date range to the last 90 days.
  • Change the primary dimension to Session default channel group and look for the AI Assistant row.
  • Add Session source as a secondary dimension to see which AI tools sent each visit, such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai.
  • Search the table for 'chatgpt'. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it shows in search answers, so these visits should be easy to spot.
  • Open Engagement, then Landing page, and filter by the same source to see which of your pages AI tools are linking to.
  • If you track enquiries (calls, WhatsApp clicks or form submissions) as key events, compare them by channel to see whether AI visitors contact you.

Should you create a custom AI channel group in GA4?

If you want more control than the default AI Assistant channel, GA4 lets you build a custom channel group from Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups. Google's help page includes an example "AI assistants" channel that uses a regex rule on the source, placed above Referral so AI visits are not swallowed by it.

Standard GA4 properties can have two custom channel groups besides the default one, and Google says they can be applied to reports retroactively, so you can look back at older data.

Test any regex before trusting it. A loose pattern that matches every source containing "ai" can pick up unrelated websites, so list the exact AI domains you care about instead.

How do you measure Google AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic?

Google says sites that appear in AI features are included in overall Search Console traffic, reported under the Web search type in the Performance report. There is no separate AI Overviews filter, so you see these clicks combined with ordinary search clicks.

In the Performance report, clicks are counted each time a user clicks your site from Google Search results. Watch the queries tab for long, question-style searches; growth in those often lines up with AI-style browsing, though Search Console does not label them.

Google also says no special markup, AI text files or extra optimisation is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. We covered the file question in Do you need llms.txt for AI search?.

What should you do if AI tools send you no traffic?

Zero AI visits in GA4 is common for small local websites, and it usually points to a basic gap rather than a penalty. Work through this checklist:

  • Check robots.txt is not blocking OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search as long as that crawler is allowed.
  • Confirm your important pages are indexed in Google Search Console and not marked noindex.
  • Make sure each service page answers one clear question in the first few lines: what you offer, where (Ramnagar, Kashipur, Nainital and so on) and how to contact you.
  • Keep your business name, address and phone number the same on your website and Google Business Profile.
  • Add a short FAQ section to key pages, written the way customers actually ask questions.
  • Review the AI Assistant channel monthly, not daily. Numbers for small sites are low and move slowly.

FAQs

Does Google Analytics 4 show ChatGPT traffic automatically?

Yes, in most cases. GA4's default channel group includes an AI Assistant channel for visits from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, and ChatGPT search links carry utm_source=chatgpt.com.

Why can't I see AI Overviews clicks separately in GA4?

Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as Organic Search. Search Console also combines them with normal web search data, so there is no separate AI Overviews report.

Do I need special code or an llms.txt file to be tracked by AI tools?

No special code is needed for tracking; the normal GA4 tag is enough. Google also says no AI text files or extra markup are required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

How many custom channel groups can I create in GA4?

A standard GA4 property allows two custom channel groups in addition to the default group, and they can be applied to past data.

Is AI search traffic worth tracking for a small business in Ramnagar?

Yes. Volumes are usually small, but tracking shows which pages AI tools already trust and whether those visitors enquire, which helps you decide where to spend effort.
