Do you need llms.txt for AI search? Google says no. What businesses in India and Uttarakhand should do instead for AI Overviews and ChatGPT.
Do you need llms.txt to appear in AI search? For Google, no. Google's guide to optimising for generative AI search says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, special markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Normal, well-run SEO is what counts.
Every week a new "AI SEO hack" does the rounds on WhatsApp groups and LinkedIn: add an llms.txt file, add special schema, cut every page into tiny chunks, buy mentions on random sites. For a resort owner in Ramnagar or a clinic in Haldwani, it is hard to know which of these are worth paying for.
The question matters more each month in India. Google's AI Mode added seven more Indian languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu, in October 2025 (TechCrunch), and in April 2026 it began helping people in India find and book restaurants using Google Maps data, according to Deccan Herald. People in Uttarakhand are already asking AI tools where to stay, eat and shop. This guide separates Google's official position from the myths.
What is llms.txt, and do you need llms.txt for Google?
llms.txt is a plain text file some website owners place at the root of their site. It lists the site's key pages in a simple format, with the idea that large language models will read it to understand the site.
Google is clear that its Search does not need it. The AI optimisation guide says you do not need to create such files to appear in Google Search, and notes that you can keep them if you want them for other services. So an llms.txt file is harmless, but it will not lift you into AI Overviews or AI Mode on its own.
If an agency is selling an llms.txt file as the main fix for AI visibility, ask what else is included. The file takes minutes to create; the work that moves the needle is elsewhere.
Which AI search myths can Indian businesses safely ignore?
Google's guide addresses several popular tactics directly. Here is what it says, in plain terms:
- Special AI files or markup: not needed for Google Search, as covered above.
- Special schema for AI: Google says there is no special schema.org markup you need to add for generative AI search. Structured data still helps with rich results, and Google's AI features page asks that it match the visible text on the page.
- Chopping content into tiny pieces: there is no requirement to break pages into small chunks, and Google says there is no ideal page length.
- Writing in a special style for AI: Google's systems understand synonyms and meaning, so you do not need separate pages for every long-tail keyword variation.
- Chasing mentions: Google says seeking inauthentic "mentions" across the web is not as helpful as it might seem. Paid listings on unrelated sites are a poor use of budget.
What actually helps a business appear in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?
According to Google's AI features page, there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and even then inclusion is not guaranteed. In short, the foundations of SEO are the foundations of AI search.
Use this checklist before spending money on anything labelled "GEO" or "AEO":
- Check indexing: open Google Search Console and use URL Inspection on your key pages (home, services, rooms, contact). If a page is not indexed, AI features cannot use it.
- Remove accidental blocks: make sure important pages do not carry a noindex or nosnippet tag left over from development.
- Write content only you can write: Google's guide asks for a unique point of view and content that does not just restate what is already online. A Corbett homestay can describe its safari zone distances, meal options and winter timings in its own words.
- Fix page experience: the site should work well on phones, load quickly and keep the main content easy to find among banners and pop-ups.
- Keep structured data honest: if you use LocalBusiness or Hotel markup, every detail in it should appear on the visible page.
- Add real photos and videos: Google treats good image and video SEO as part of optimising for generative AI search.
- Track results in the right report: Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, not shown separately.
Why does Google Business Profile matter so much for AI search?
For local searches, AI answers lean heavily on business information Google already trusts. Google's AI optimisation guide names Google Business Profile and Merchant Center as ways to help your business details and products appear in AI responses.
The same profile drives your local ranking. Google's Business Profile Help says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Its advice is practical: verify the business, keep the address, hours, special hours, category and attributes accurate, respond to reviews and add photos.
For Ramnagar businesses, special hours matter around the Corbett season, Diwali and New Year, when timings often change. An AI answer that quotes the wrong closing time costs you a customer.
Should you block or allow AI crawlers like ChatGPT's?
ChatGPT works differently from Google. OpenAI's crawler documentation explains that OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt if you want to appear there. Sites that opt out will not show in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links.
GPTBot is a separate crawler linked to model training, and OpenAI treats the two settings independently. A business can allow OAI-SearchBot for visibility and block GPTBot if it does not want its content used for training.
Ask your developer or hosting provider to check your robots.txt file. Some security plugins and default settings block bots broadly, which can quietly keep you out of AI answers.
